the rock house story

THE ROCK HOUSE
The locals call it the Rock House and it fits. This historic building has served many uses over the decades. Originally the grain depot for the B&O railroad, then a residence, a brass shop and now an amazing weekend rental. The property is located in the heart of the Village of Summit Point at 2985 Summit Point Road cornering on Hawthorne Ave. We are 1 mile from the Motorsports Park entrance, 2 blocks from the Rail Stop Cafe, 20 minutes from Winchester to the West and 15 minutes East to Charlestown. We are in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley!
The house totals approx. 2600 square feet of living space including the loft area and upstairs bath. We call this upstairs loft bedroom the "three season room" as even with central air, it can be warm in the summer and chilly in the winter. We do not count this space when describing the house as a two bedroom. The parlor bedroom is located on the front of the house and includes a queen bed. The second bedroom is located at the rear of the house and also has a queen bed. We have two full baths each with shower. The kitchen features custom cabinetry and storage shelves built using original woods found on site. Major appliances include a microwave, electric oven and refrigerator, plus small appliances including a coffee maker, toaster and blender along with silverware. The main room has the dining room table with seating for six, at large screen smart TV and small bar area. The original lift used to move grain to the loft is still in place. The exposed post and beam construction, exposed stone walls and oak flooring make this a truly great space to hang out. Outside, there is a small covered porch on the front of the house to hang out on and watch the world go by. Out back we have a patio next to the cart rails that led from the house to the railroad cars. A gas grill, fire pit and seating are yours to enjoy. Parking includes the paved area next to the house and will fit two large vehicles/trucks. We do not have room for trailers, unfortunately. Before you visit us, you do need to know this building is over 200 years old. Water is provided by an underground cistern filled as needed with chlorinated water from a local hauler. Our septic system is of unknown size. For these reasons, we ask guests to be conscious of water usage and enjoy bottled water for drinking. Because this property was the railroad depot, the rear of the property is quite close the the tracks. We often wave to the conductor as he rumbles by.
